Our Micro-Community Cohabitation Model (MCCM), also affectionately nicknamed #CoHo4Youth, is designed to provide not just housing, but a stable, nurturing environment that fosters growth, community, and independence for transitioning foster youth.
The heart of our model is a cooperative housing approach where young adults, between the ages of 18 to 21, live together as housemates within a small housing complex. This approach drastically reduces the risk of homelessness by providing affordable housing while simultaneously fostering a sense of responsibility, teamwork, and community. Each resident contributes to maintaining the housing cooperative and is encouraged to participate in communal activities.
But our model goes beyond just providing a roof over their heads. We understand that transitioning into adulthood requires essential life skills. Therefore, our micro-community is supported by a robust program of learning, with monthly resident meetings and bimonthly workshops conducted by volunteer industry professionals. These sessions cover topics like financial literacy, job search and interview skills, health and wellness, and other critical aspects of independent living. See a list of our upcoming workshops HERE.
The residents also develop a shared sense of responsibility and ownership, as they are involved in decisions regarding complex management and event planning. This inclusive approach fosters a sense of agency and belonging, instilling confidence in their capabilities and decisions.
What makes our model special is the establishment of a safety net in the form of lasting relationships. We believe strongly in the power of community and connections. Through shared experiences, residents form a support network among themselves, that extends beyond their time in our housing and becomes a lifelong source of support.
Ultimately, the MCCM isn't just about housing; it's about preparing these young adults for the leap into independence, giving them a safe, supportive environment where they can grow, learn, and thrive. This is the essence of Project Lilypad. We welcome you to join us in creating a positive and lasting impact in the lives of these young adults.
